BrightnessKeys

BrightnessKeys is a Lilu plugin that handles brightness key events through ACPI Video Extensions, providing proper brightness control on Hackintosh systems.

Overview

On many Hackintosh laptops, the brightness keys (Fn+F5/F6 or similar) donโ€™t work out of the box because macOS doesnโ€™t properly handle ACPI Video Extension events from non-Apple hardware. BrightnessKeys intercepts these ACPI events and translates them into proper macOS brightness adjustments, restoring full brightness key functionality.

Features

  • Brightness Key Support: Handles brightness up/down key events via ACPI
  • ACPI Video Extensions: Processes ACPI _DOD and _BCL methods for brightness control
  • Automatic Detection: Automatically detects and binds to the correct ACPI device
  • Lilu Integration: Built on the Lilu patching framework for stability

Installation

  1. Install Lilu first
  2. Download the latest release from GitHub
  3. Copy BrightnessKeys.kext to EFI/OC/Kexts/
  4. Add the kext to your config.plist under Kernel > Add
  5. Ensure Lilu is loaded before BrightnessKeys
  6. Reboot your system
